The formula behind the number
Calorie calculators use the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method. One MET is the energy your body uses at rest; walking ranges from about 2 to 8 METs depending on pace and slope.
These values come from the Compendium of Physical Activities, the peer-reviewed reference exercise scientists use to standardize energy cost across activities.

Calories per mile stay fairly stable across speeds, since walking faster just covers the distance in less time. A common estimate is 0.4 to 0.5 calories per pound of body weight, per mile. How does the walking calories calculator work?
The calculator turns three inputs, your weight, your pace, and your time, into one number using the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method described above. Here's the actual sequence it runs:
- It sets a MET value from your pace and slope, using the same walking MET values shown in the table earlier on this page.
- It multiplies that MET value by your body weight in kilograms. This is why two people walking the same route get different results.
- It multiplies the result by your time in hours. Longer walks add up linearly.
One thing worth being upfront about: MET values are population averages. Your actual burn can run about 10 to 15% above or below the estimate depending on your fitness level, body composition, age, and walking efficiency. Treat the result as a reliable planning number, not an exact measurement.

Say a 65 kg (143 lb) person walks at 3 mph up a 5% grade for 30 minutes.
Change only the grade to flat ground (0%) and the same walk drops to about 114 kcal, using the moderate-pace MET of 3.5. The 5% incline alone accounts for roughly 58 extra calories over that half hour, which is why the slope field matters more than most people expect.

A rough per-kilometer shortcut
For quick mental math, a common rule of thumb is about 0.5 calories per kilogram of body weight, per kilometer walked. A 75 kg walker covering 3 km would land around 112 calories by this shortcut. Treat it as a ballpark only: it doesn't account for pace the way the full MET formula does, so it tends to run lower than the calculator's actual output at a genuinely brisk effort.
